Posture and Back Problems
Since childhood we have been constantly admonished to ‘Sit straight!’ ‘w\Walk erect!’ Don’t slump!’ Don’t stoop!’ This was an excellent advice, since wrong posture causes a strain on our backs and leads to backache. Deformities act similarly. Factors affecting correct posture have been discussed now.

Overweight
Being overweight even without a sizeable paunch puts an additional load on the spine thus making vulnerable to backache.

Paunch and Pregnancy
Increase in abdominal girth also alters the normal posture and puts burden on te back. This is the cause of backache in pregnancy.

Sprains and Fractures
Sprains and fractures can cause backache due to inflammation (swelling) or due to pressure on nerves.

Slipped Disc and Spondylitis
These have been already discussed in detail.

Nerve Compression
Nerve compression may be caused due to fractures, spondylitis, disc prolapse, tumours, etc., which can lead to backache.

Cancer and Infections in Spine
These can cause backache due to inflammation (Swelling) or pressure on nerves.

Problems in Abdomen and Pelvis
Abdominal and pelvic problems like intestinal ulcers, Pelvic Inflammatory Diseases (PID) kidney ad gall stones, infection and inflammation in any abdominal organ, problems in uterus, ovaries and tubes, prostate and urinary problems, can all cause backache.

Diseases of Muscles, Spinal Anaesthetic Injections, Arthritis of Spine
These conditions or procedures can cause backache.

Piles and Fissure
This condition can also cause lower backache.

Psychiatric Cuauses and Mental Tension
Mind plays a big role in pain, including backache. Anytime we are tense, our regular pain sensors (receptors) ‘act up’ and we get relief when the tension is released. Psychotherapy, reassurance and mild anxiolytics (drugs that reduce anxiety) therefore help in chronic pain off any origin.

Copeman’s Nodules

These nodules are found under the skin in obese people especially post-menopausal women. These may cause pain anywhere in the body especially in the back. In cases of chronic pain where no other cause is found, this cause should be looked for. The Copeman’s syndrome is managed by massaging with gradually increasing pressure, jet massages in a warm pool, relaxation exercises, and if required, injections of corticosteroids or local anaesthetics into the affected part.
